The one year sweater

Yesterday I decided I was going to finish this sweater I’ve been working on for Yuji. No reason in particular, I just wanted it done.

Lately she’s been complaining that her arms itch when she’s wearing a sweater – but she complains while wearing any sweater, no matter the fiber, so I know it’s in her head. But I decided there’s no point in putting a bunch of work into a sweater she won’t wear… so I ripped out the sleeve I had started on, and made it into a short sleeved sweater.

I’m keeping the remaining yarn and when it’s time to pass the sweater down to Chancey, it should be easy to rip out the ribbing and add sleeves. Anyway, when I went to update my project page on Ravelry to complete, I realized I had cast the sweater on exactly a year ago. Oops. Well, thankfully I always make sweaters for the kids too large (because if I’m going to go through the trouble of knitting a sweater, I want it to fit for more than a few weeks!) so it will still fit Yuji.

2016 goals

I made 47 hats in 2015!

hatsNow that I look at all of these, I’m pretty sure at least 15 of them are from patterns. So I’m going to call the “knit 15 hats from patterns” goal a success and the 52 hats an almost, but not quite.

As for Stationary Sheeping… again, not quite. But, I did knit and crochet quite a bit, and I kept track of everything.

Yards in 2/9/15 – 12/31/15: **25500**
Yards out 2/9/15 – 12/31/15:

So, with the 2015 goals settled, my 2016 goals are

– Try again for 52 hats. This will include this baker’s dozen of Woolly Wormhead patterns.
– Use my library. Only buy patterns if I’m going to start them immediately. Only buy books if there is a pattern I will start immediately.
– Make 16 items to donate.
– Stationary Sheep; get at least as much yarn out as I take in.
– Learn this “Invisible Stranding” technique.
– Make a good project bag with a zipper.
– Try Madelinetosh, Malabrigo, and Noro.
– Design a hat pattern.
– Finish or frog all my WIPs, and keep the number lower.
– Start going to the library again.
– Make a sweater for myself.
– Review some stuff.

So, thems the goals! Happy New Year everybody!

No Yarncast for Christmas

I’m really frustrated right now. I was filming an episode of Yarncast, and was about 95% done, when my camera batteries died. My camera does this thing where if the batteries are about to die, it warns me at the last possible second – not giving me enough time to stop recording – and then turns off, sending the video irrecoverably into oblivion. This wouldn’t upset me so much if it didn’t give that last-second warning. The fact that the camera gives that warning means it COULD either warn me sooner, or stop the recording so the video is saved. Then I would, at least, have 95% of a video and not 0%. If I had 95% I would change the batteries and finish the other 5%, but I don’t have time to re-record that 95%. Nor the disposition to not be cranky while doing it.

So instead, I’ll make a blog post of all the things I talked about. Continue reading

Nearing the end of 2015

So let’s take a look at my Stationary Sheep and my goals…

I destashed quite a bit, and subtracted that from my yarn in. And I did buy sparingly during Cyber Monday. So the current count is:

Yards in since 2/9/15: 25500
Yards out since 2/9/15: 20101

So, I’m pretty close! I will not be buying any more yarn this year, so I do have a chance to catch up. If I finish all the stuff i want to finish this month, I should be in the black.

I said my goals for this year are:

Donate 15 items
Knit 15 different patterns of hats
Finish 2014 afghans.
Buy only 15 patterns (other than patterns from a list of certain people)
Dye 15 skeins of yarn
Buy 15 skeins of handdyed yarn, updated to 30

Donate 15 items
I still haven’t done it. My plan is to pick out 15 suitable items that haven’t sold after Christmas. And finish the one item that is specifically for donating.

Knit 15 different patterns of hats
I am currently at 13, have 1 in progress and have plans to do another two this month.

Current total hat count is 43 out of 52.

Finish 2014 afghans.
Fail. Didn’t happen… probably ain’t gonna happen.

Buy only 15 patterns (other than patterns from a list of certain people)

1. Big Herringbone Hat
2. Contrast
3. Diamond Cut Fingerless Mitt Collection
4. Aria’s Hat
5. Ultimate Mittens
6. Knits for Boys
7. Lidian
8. Bancroft Top ebook
9. Celestial Wonders Afghan
10. Handbrake
11. Chloe The Panda
12. Noodle
13. pineapple hat
14. workmans sock
15. red riding mittens
16. knotted pine
17. red flannel
18. peppermint & pine set
19. Zart mittens
20. Mom’s Favorite Color
21. Corbet Brook Mittens
22. Great Big Slouch

So, I did not buy only 15. But It’s still much better than 2014 where I bought more than 70 and used less than 5 of those. Status: fail, but much better than last year. I will not buy any more the rest of the year.

Dye 15 skeins of yarn
I did 20-something… I lost count. But that was a success.

Buy 30 skeins of handdyed yarn
I bought 39. A far cry from last year, when I bought 4! I have pretty much stopped buying yarn at craft stores; it is all either luxury yarn, or buying in bulk or at a discount. So that is a success.

I totally failed at the “brown bag sock club”. I made 15 bags, and I’ve got 12 left (so, that will be my brown bag club for next year. And I will be totally surprised because I have forgotten what is in them all), and one or two of the ones I did open I never got around to casting on.

I also haven’t gotten many of my 15 oldest skeins done, but if I get the wips done that I want to get done this month, I think that will take care of all of them that aren’t in the brown bags. Heh.

December Goals

9 more hats. Like I said I have 1 in progress and 2 planned so that only leaves 6 to plan.

Finish some WIPs! I still have about 28 WIPs I want to finish this month. It is doable if I actually do it but the problem is doing it… lol.

Off the knitworthy list and back again

Yuji left one of her mittens in the car last winter. I left it there for her to bring in herself, but she never did; so it spent its whole spring and summer back there. At some point it migrated to the floor.

I was finally cleaning out the car the other day and after months of being stepped on, the mitten had a hole. So I threw it out. She has several pairs of store-bought mittens and gloves passed down from Sabastian and Nathan, purchased before I started knitting. They sit in a closet doing nothing – I figured she could wear those.

Friday night and Saturday we had our first snow – several inches of thick sticky snow – so Yuji and Chance went out to build a snowman. Yuji had to wear some store-bought gloves. Her hands were quickly soaked and freezing, while Chance’s stayed warm. Yuji came in saying she needed to change gloves, so I gave her the one remaining mitten, and one store bought glove.

It didn’t take long for her to realize the difference. The hand in the handmade wool glove stayed warm, the other one quickly froze. She came in and begged me to make her more mittens. She apologized for not taking care of the other mitten and promised to take care of them if I’d make more.

How could I resist? I let her pick out some yarn and cast on some mittens. The first one is done.

Q3 2015 Goals Recap

Update: I can no longer recommend Yarnbox. See this ravelry thread to explain why –

Uh, where did Q3 go? I blinked and I think I missed it.

Stationary Sheep From February 9 – Black Friday
IN: 30,011
OUT: 14,500

So obviously, I failed on not buying any luxury yarn in Q3. However! In Q3 I did get more out than came in! So I’m on the right track. Kinda. Again, that’s only the yardage out for finished projects, so I have actually gotten quite a bit more than that “out”… I just need to finish all my WIPs! Especially since I hope to start 2016 with a clean slate – no WIPs, so I can accurately reset the count on yards in and out.

Not buying yarn is hard for me though because it’s how I reward myself… so I’m trying to come up with other rewards. My plan is to instead put the money I’d be spending on luxury yarn aside, and then if/when my yarn out catches up with my yarn in, sign up for yarnbox. My plan is that yarnbox will kind of replace the Highland Handmades Color Study Club for next year – because I’m loving the surprise of getting something from Highland Handmades every month, but I’d rather get more of a range from different dyers next year. And if I use money set aside for yarnbox, that leaves me more money every month to buy from other dyers… Though I do hope to continue to Stationary Sheep next year.

Anyway, I’ll only allow myself to sign up for yarnbox before the Highland Handmades club is over if I catch up. I know I want to sign up for the socks box first. And then I’m considering the “classic” box too, but I don’t know. That would definitely give me a range, but it would also give lots of opportunity for stuff I don’t want. Of course, I could always sell or trade anything I don’t want. So I’m not sure on that yet.

I didn’t buy any luxury patterns and I got stuff done for Ramencon so Q3 goals were kind of a success.

Current hat count is 28 out of 52.

There’s no update to other goals.

Q4 Goals:

– Get WIPs finished or frogged.
– Knit/crochet 24 more hats.
– If my yarn out has not caught up to my yarn in by Black Friday, buy yarn sparingly on Cyber Monday. Catch up at least by the end of the year.
– Get those 15 items donated

Ramencon 2015

I had an amazing time at Ramencon!!

The Artist Alley was in a room this year, with opening/closing times and all that. I was really worried that less people would come buy, compared to last year (when it was in a hallway and people HAD to walk through to get to other things). But my worries were totally unfounded, and they did everything right – when the AA was open, there were multiple doors open wide and everyone walking down the hallway saw inside anyway.

And I was right across from one of those doors, leading to me having the ability to draw people in! And come in they did. I went to Ramencon with 6 boxes full of stuff, I was making stuff the whole time I was in the AA, and I left with ONE box. So, I sold very, very well. And this being a local con (~20 minutes away from me) meant that most of it was profit as I didn’t need a hotel room and only a little was spent on gas!

Closing times also had a benefit for me; all the panels I wanted to go to happened to be after the AA closed, so I didn’t have to worry about getting someone to cover the table while I went. And then I had a great time at the panels! So Ramencon was an all-around great convention.

Next up… if I even get in, is the Portage Christmas Craft Show in 9 weeks. I lollygagged on registering for it this year, and went back and forwards in my head deciding if I would or not… with how many online orders I’ve been getting this year, did I want to do it? I eventually decided that I need to do it to try to move some of the things I won’t advertise online, but that aren’t a good fit for Ramencon. So, I guess I’ll know soon if there’s even any spots left and if I’m in that or not.

Q2 2015 Goals Recap

So somehow it is July 6th already. Honestly, I spend the last week recovering from the MLP con and crocheting Discord the week before. I only now feel like I’m starting to get back on track and into my normal routine. It didn’t help that I started feeling sick last Monday, but at least that waited until after the con. Anyway~ better late than never! Here’s the Q2 goals recap. Continue reading

My Little Pony Fair and Convention 2015

Since parking was free, I took the toll road. I’m thinking that’s going to start being a con-going expense I set aside money for every time, free parking or not. Because that was a millions times nicer of a drive. Except for the part where one toll booth operator stole $5 from me… he saw I gave him a 10, said “Out of 10…” and then gave me change for a $5. My fault for not counting, especially since he seemed kind of awkward/suspicious as he gave me the change, but, bah. It’s lucky I noticed before I ended up at a toll with no more cash in hand. I’m probably going to get an I-Pass soon. Anyway;

My plan of doing both a Discord and a Flutterbat didn’t work out. I ended up starting Discord with 6 days to go before the con. Even though it took me about 40 hours, I finished him! And he is awesome. And he won first place in the handicraft contest.

As for cosplay, I only got pics of what Yuji and Chance wore on Saturday.

Yuji ended up not going on Sunday, and Chance – who had been so excited to wear both tutu-involving cosplay – got upset because on Saturday, lots of people thought he was a girl. Lol, I don’t know what he expected. And honestly, people think he’s a girl no matter what he wears, because he’s so dang cute, and people for some reason think only girls can be cute or something. Well, he refused to wear the Fluttershy tutu on Sunday, so I kind of girled-down the cosplay; he wore pink pants, a yellow shirt with Fluttershy’s cutie mark on it, and carried a Parasprite plush I whiped together on Saturday night.

The kids have already requested different colors, and it only took me about an hour to make this – and that was with sewing the whole back of the thing together the first time (rather than just the back seam) and having to redo it. So I predict these will multiply just like the real thing. Well, not that fast, but you know what I mean.

The body is felt with embroidered eyes and mouth, and the wings and legs are felt. Felt is great for the legs, but not the wings – they just flop around, and kind of cover up the plush if you pick it up. But lesson learned, and this one works fine for sitting with my personal pony plushies. Sunday night Chance and I picked up some white fleece and blue fleece, so the next Parasprite should be blue with proper wings.

Anyway – my haul from the con!

MLP con 2015 Haul

* plushies – Blossom and Cherries Jubilee
* Twice as fancy pony Sugarberry, cuz nostalgia (this was one of my fav pony toys as a kid)
* Handmade purse that will be used as a project bag. It’s G3 fabric, and I don’t much like G3, but it’s green & purple so how could I not?
* Fair tote bags. I commandeered Wes’ too, so I have two. Those will also be used as tote bags.
* Fair t-shirt. Yuji & Chance also each got one.

It was a lot of fun, though it is definitely more a collectors fair than a convention. Next year though, we’ll have Whinny City Pony Con! Squeeeeee!
